We celebrate the launch of WAIHSS with an online event. Join us to hear more about WAIHSS, who we are and what we (want to) do. We will also be joined by three of our advisory board members, Ana Valdivia, Natali Helberger and Pei Sze Chow, who will share their experiences of being female academics in the field of AI, and discuss why initiatives such as WAIHSS matter. The event is online (Zoom) and open to everyone.

WAIHSS is organising an informal ‘Meet & Greet’ in connection with years EASST conference in Krakow to begin putting some faces to our evolving community. Two of the founding members, Nadja Schaetz and Anna Schjøtt, will be there to answer any questions you might have about WAIHSS, and we will also use this as a moment to hear more about what you would like WAIHSS to be, and what initiatives could be beneficial for the community.

In the first instance of the Women in Dialogue Series, we have the pleasure of welcoming danah boyd. The interview will examine AI as a world-building project, from which many women are frequently excluded - in no small part because the AI futures that they imagine do not align with those who control the networks, the capital and the power at the heart of the current “AI project“. The interview will also touch upon danah’s upcoming book Data Are Made, Not Found: A Story of Politics, Power, and the Civil Servants Who Saved the US Census, which will be published this autumn.

During this AoIR pre-coference workshop we will collaboratively generate preliminary empirical mappings of gender (mis)representation and (mis)recognition in AI research. Keynote Speakers: danah boyd & Nanna Thylstrup
