Women in Dialogue - Jannie Møller Hartley

In this Women in Dialogue Series we will talk to, Professor Jannie Møller Hartley about her new book Just for You: Inside the Personalization Algorithms That Curate Our Image of the World  (Nordicom, 2026).

The book weaves together two stories of women entering male-dominated worlds of machines: Hartley’s ethnographic journey inside the development of personalization algorithms, and the story of Ada Lovelace, who wrote the first published computer algorithm in the nineteenth century.

Taking a techno-feminist perspective, Hartley explores what becomes visible when we study AI through situated experiences, relationships, and human judgement. Combining ethnography, history, and ethnographic poetry, the book moves beyond familiar utopian and dystopian narratives to explore the ambiguities of AI - and asks how feminist perspectives and more reflexive research methods might help us imagine different technological futures.

Jannie Møller Hartley is Professor and Ph.d. in Communication and Journalism. She is currently co-leading the Centre for big data at Roskilde University and the PI of the reasearch project AUTOPUBLICS.

The interview series takes place online (Zoom), and is open for everyone.

The event takes place Thursday October 22 from 3:30-4 PM (CEST).
